Monday Tuneday: MSTRKRFT

03.10.2008 @ 1:32 PM in Culture
Since I wasn't feeling to particularily sneaky to try and record MSTRKRFT when they showed up at the Tralf in Buffalo this Sunday, I bring you a clip of their previous show on the 7th @ StudioB in NYC... MSTRKRFT in person is more amazing on stage than you could possibly imagine. If it wasn't for the annoying opening acts like Mark Webb and Bev Beverly, I could have stayed till the end. However the pulsing highs from the synths of the opening acts put too much fatigue on my club ravaged ears, and I had to leave. Real bummer, I felt a bit like "clockwork orange" being pained to hear music from a group I love so much. However next chance I get I'll be at another MSTRKRFT concert, with earplugs.

Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes

03.07.2008 @ 12:12 PM in Culture
I recently started listening to Santogold when I heard of them from the RCRD LBL blog. L.E.S. Artistes was a favorite track and now I have a video to go with it. Directed by Nima Nourizadeh. I really dig the violence, its so artistic and even at some points intentionally faux-realistic. You just gotta watch.
 • This is better than good; this is gold— SANTOGOLD! Santogold is a survivor of a half-century worth of living along musical evolution’s most cutting edges. The only live act that can boast of having out-aged Barbara Bush, having outlived Mr. Miyagi and out-styled Liberace, Santogold is here with future flavor.Already receiving weighty club rotation and airplay in urban Afghanistan and downtown Beirut, Santogold is the first act of the century to boast a post-war following on the International Space Station Mir. Following a live performance broadcast from three thousand miles off the Cape of Good Hope last June, inmates at Leavenworth Penitentiary received Santogold with a celebratory confetti parade. Just another first for the modern super group that knows no bound.Composed of absolutely no members, Santogold is also the first musical outfit capable of claiming the planet’s broiling collective consciousness as their front woman. Longtime collaborator, singer and songwriter Santi White says of her work with Santogold, “We began trying to write pop songs to sell, which made us depressed, so we started writing songs for ourselves instead.” The results of that self-centered conceit is the songwriting work heard for the first time on the full length Santogold album, as yet untitled, to be released in 2007 on the Lizard King label. As unmastered tracks leaked over the internet this past November, the request lines of radio stations from Miami to Hanoi began freezing with a flood of calls from listeners eager to hear the new Santogold sound over their frequencies. From his radio show in the United Arab Emirates capital city of Abu Dhabi, Michael Jackson (the King of Pop) played what Santogold snippets he had been able to pirate from a bootleg MySpace page dedicated to the group. Days later, BBC Radio One reported that the unreleased Santogold debut was heard blasting from the iPod shuffle of Libyan ruler Moammar Qaddafi as he entered an international summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Recognizing the urgent need to address the uproarious buzz, Santogold released the following statement through their label reps at Lizard King: “The response to our unmastered songs has been both premature and phenomenal! We were happy to hear that the children of Darfur have found hope in our melodic interpretation of life on the battlefield of love! We’re hoping that each and every 20-something from downtown San Francisco to central Mumbai will also learn something from our work! And to the people dropping no-knock fire on old ladies in Atlanta: shame on you! Santogold ain’t with that shit!” The trajectory of such early successes leading to newfound political clout is nothing new for Santogold, whose debut album, though half a century in the making, is sure to rock glass pipes from the Lincoln Memorial to Buckingham palace. The flavor of the gold is guaranteed: Santogold! - Via Myspace

Planet Unicorn: Tom Cruise Returns with Episode 6

03.05.2008 @ 2:10 PM in Culture
When Channel 101 cancelled Planet Unicorn a few months back, my world was crushed. How was I supposed to go on without knowing what happened to Tom cruise and his pastel colored unicorn friends? Fortune has prevailed and blessed us with one more episode, despite the belated Christmas theme.

Monday Tuneday: Justice DVNO

03.03.2008 @ 1:53 PM in Culture
I've watched "DVNO" about 10 times so far since it was "released" this weekend. I can't get enough. The newest Justice video was directed by SO ME, the same person who directed DANCE and is responsible for nearly all the graphical work that accompanies the killer acts on the Ed Banger Label. Styled as a tribute to the 70-80's style tv bumps, see how many you can spot. [flashvideo filename=http://buffawhat.com/files/video/dvnoclip.flv image=wp-content/uploads/2008/05/dvno_flv_sh.jpg /]

N.E.R.D: Everybody Nose

02.04.2008 @ 4:07 PM in Culture
Everybody Nose I haven't the foggiest idea what they are talking about (look above), but N.E.R.D is back with a brand new song hailing from the old days of Pharrell. Like, before he decided that his solo works were a good idea.  Oh and on another note, N.E.R.D. will be touring this year with Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco, and Kayne West on the Glow in The Dark Tour. Listen to the track "Everybody Nose" and peep the metaphors.

Superbowl: Hulu makes watching the Superbowl obsolete.

02.04.2008 @ 11:18 AM in Culture
sbads2008hulu.jpg I didn't watch the Superbowl. The Giants won though, right? Thats nice, I'm sure it was fun, I'm sure you all drank too much beer and woke up a bit sick from diving in the community dip bowl where everyone's grubby fingers (yours included) double dipped all night. Germs are tasty eh? Anyways, the only draw, well what used to be, was the halftime show, movie trailers, and Budweiser ads. Well, Paula Abdul bit it hard this time, the Bud ads aren't what they used to be, and the movie trailers aren't anything new if you saw any movie in the past month. Now, Hulu, freemium online video "snacking" service, has put up all 56 ads for your viewing pleasure on their site. the downside is that you have to register for a free beta invitation, but I've embedded some of the more interesting ads in this post. Click after the jump to view them. Audi: R8 Godfather Coca Cola: Coke Floats FedEx: Carrier Pigeons Wanted: Trailer Wall-E: Trailer LifeWater: Thriller Amp'd: Boogie Jump

SaiOne: My Narcissistic Daily Dose

01.25.2008 @ 2:23 PM in Culture

sai_one_1.jpg [Brooklyn Industries, left. and Jib Hunt, lower right]  Angel is my left nut. Kinda sweet and endearing of me eh?  We hang out every day, either at my office or his store, Sai One. Since he moved shop to the 800 block on Elmwood, it's never been so much fun. The amount of hot guys (bears too!) walking in and out have tripled, and with more merch moving, there's more stuff getting shipped in from NYC. That being said, I get the loverly privelage of trying on all the smedium fitting items. yea, it's smedium. Higher end lines have been whittling down the standard sizes a lot more lately: small is extra small, medium is a smedium or regular small, and large is a medium allovasudden.  When I try everything on, Angel tells me I'm growing a belly (LIES!!!) and that I'm getting huge, because the mediums are fitting nicely now. He's just yealous of mah sexiness. All things aside, the stuff at Sai One you won't find anywhere but NYC, and only if you know how to get places. And you can also rest assured that Angel and his biz partner try to only stock one of each, no copy cats around herr. sai_one_2.jpg You can click below for a flickr set with a lot more photos of yours truly looking dapper and smug in some new arrivals... I'll warn you that if you like something you saw on me, you should come get it before I get paid. Game on Bitches.

 • P.S. - Angel has a website coming soon for the store, so we took a whole lot of merchandise pictures, like the pillows, and purses, shoes, and candles. He stocks a lot more than skinny boy clothes, but I can't wear a cocktail dress or a candlestick now can I?

Bat For Lashes video has Furries and Glitter FTW

01.23.2008 @ 2:30 PM in Culture
batforlashes_banner.jpg If you have never heard of Bat for Lashes before, don't feel bad, I didn't until 30 minutes ago. Bat for Lashes is Natasha Kahn, a Brighton born English songwriter who gives us an idea of what would happen if Tori Amos, the old (really early) Goldfrapp, and björk had a mutant baby who sang. A contender for the Mercury Prize (lost to the Klaxons), her debut album is Fur and Gold, and she has already finished writing her second album, which is soon to hit the recording studio. BfL's video single, "What's a Girl To Do" was also named Best Video of the Year by Antville. It features Natasha riding very Darko-like with some synchronized bikers in fur suits. In a stunning match to the ethereal tune, check it out below and buy this little lady's album.
